Twelve Needle Box prints bound in maroon half leather, gilt title and decoration to spine. Very good. Each print (approx 2ins x 1 in) is mounted on card with the name written in pencil in the corner. Includes nine prints from the set ' Tarantella' (lacking 'Waterfall in the Alps), but including 'Queen Victoria' and 'Columbine'. George Baxter (1804 - 1867) was one of the first printers to perfect the art of colour printing - up to this time, most colouring had been done by hand. Among other things, he produced sets of prints which were used to decorate boxes of needles of various sizes. This is a charming little book with all the prints clear and bright. Printed for Private circulation by Robert Roberts in 1878. Internally clean and bright, very minor foxing, tanning. Frontispiece has b/w engraving with tissue guard by W.M. McGill of the Hanaper Cup, the oldest piece of silver plate that Brasenose College possessed at the time. Brasenose, one of the oldest Oxford Colleges, founded in 1509, used to brew its own beer and each year an undergraduate would write verses in praise of the new brew.
