Item Description: Printed for Private Circulation, [The Fuller Worthies' Library], [Blackburn], 1872. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. First Edition.. Two volumes. [Blackburn]: Printed for Private Circulation, [The Fuller Worthies' Library], 1872-1873. Quarto. First edition. Portrait (this to volume two), nine plates, decorative head- and tail-pieces. §One of an edition of 100 (ex 256) large-paper sets. Original maroon quarter morocco, gilt lettering and decoration, maroon cloth boards, top edge rough, others untrimmed. Boards discoloured, and bindings somewhat rubbed but sturdy and sound - neatly internally strengthened at head of spines; two inner hinges also strengthened. Glue-marks to endpapers of volume one. Foxing to prelims., and - slightly so - to page edges. One leaf carelessly opened at top edge. §§The 1890's poet and aesthete JOHN GRAY'S COPY, with his handsome bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Front free endpapers bear the circular library stamp (with handwritten cancellation) of the Dominican Fathers, Edinburgh, with whom Gray was connected subsequent to his aesthetic period, and into whose possession came at least one other volume from Gray's library. No further Dominican stamps to either volume. John Gray, the supposed original of the 'Dorian Gray' of Oscar Wilde, had a lifelong interest in Renaissance poetry and contributed editions of Campion, Constable, Drayton and Sidney. His copies of editions of Phineas Fletcher and Herbert of Cherbury - each bearing the same bookplate - are in private hands. "[W]hen Gray came to write his essay on hymn writing in 1925. he listed as masters in this field: Dryden, Crashaw, Southwell, Patmore, Michael Field, Lionel Johnson, and Hopkins", Brocard Sewell, 'In the Dorian Mode: A Life of John Gray 1866-1934', 1983, p.66. Not a beautiful set, but a serviceable one and with an interesting provenance. (**PLEASE READ CAREFULLY** - Heavy set weighing almost 4kg not including packaging materials, therefore additional postage will be charged. PLEASE CONTACT US for a prior shipping quote & further information). Bookseller Inventory # 300081
