On June 28th, 1969, police in New York City performed a routine raid on a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn. For the first time in recorded history, members of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered) community stood up to the police and fought back for their rights. What followed into the night and following days were riots and rebellion generally acknowledged as the watershed moment that kicked off the gay rights movement. Now, 40 years later, LGBT communities all over the world celebrate gay pride, commonly referred to simply as Pride, with festivals, parades, readings, seminars and more.

In 1895, satirist Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labor for nothing more than being gay and acting accordingly. While persecution may be far from extinct, diversity in sexuality has come a long way, and that is reflected nowhere else so well as in literature. Looking at some of the best and brightest gay writers from yesterday and today, as well as the most acclaimed and beloved gay-centric content, help us celebrate Pride 2009 with a good book.
