Scared of Santa: Scenes of Terror in Toyland - Denise Joyce & Nancy Watkins

Murder, monsters, super-heroes, terrified children and a yak - not all Christmas books are about Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and goodwill towards all men. If you want to break a few festive traditions then these unusual Christmas books are ideal - they range from the struggles of the modern-age Santa Claus to a collection of homoerotic tales and a Harlequin romance.

Perhaps top of the heap is Scared of Santa: Scenes of Terror in Toyland by Denise Joyce and Nancy Watkins. This photographic gem offers images of terrified young children scared out of their wits upon meeting Santa Claus for the first time in shopping malls.  Father Christmas doesn’t seem that cuddly when he’s not particularly festive, dressed in a sweaty, scatchy costume and crumbs can be seen in his beard. Fans of Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris will relish this ‘reality christmas’ book.
