From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America by James Longstreet (1896)
From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America
James Longstreet (1896)

Few subjects have been so thoroughly recorded, examined and analyzed than the battles of the American Civil War. There are dozens and dozens of books about the major battles – such as Gettysburg, Shiloh, Appomattox and Antietam – and many more concerning lesser conflicts, skirmishes, sieges and the battles fought at sea.

Authors specializing in the Civil War and historians concerned in key moments of local history have richly detailed the days, hours and even minutes that mattered to the Union and Confederate forces as they struggled for the upper hand. Many of these books are out-of-print, most copies showcased are very affordable – a few have been celebrated by special leather-bound editions.

This selection ranges from books published in 1878 to a recent account published in 1998. It covers a vast range of writing styles. Although this is a list of non-fiction, the novel Shiloh by Shelby Foote has been included because of its exceptional narrative of this bloody battle.
