Bookfever owners Chris Volk and Shep Iiams started selling online in 1993 on the Compuserve Book Collecting Forum; in 1997, they began listing on AbeBooks.com. As full-time, mostly internet booksellers, they were able to move to a rural Northern California location in 1998. They are long-time members of IOBA (Independent Online Booksellers Association) where Chris is currently serving as President. As pioneers in internet book selling, they have been featured in several major papers including: The New York Times "An Upstart Upsets The Old Book Cart", Los Angeles Times "Writing the book on childhood treasures", USA Today Weekend "In Search of Pages From the Past" and The Sacramento Bee "Remote Amador County Booksellers Thrive on Rarities".
Among their specialties are African American literature and history, modern first editions including poetry, books by women authors, mysteries, science fiction, fantasy and horror; children's books from the hard-to-find first editions of classic children's books like Curious George - to pop-up books and juvenile series, especially the popular Trixie Belden, and less well-known, but still loved authors like Augusta Huiell Seaman. They have more than 30,000 books listed online, including 24,000 first editions and over 9,000 books signed by the author or illustrator, including some uncommon inscribed books.
Within the field of modern first editions, Chris has been reading and collecting books by women authors for many years - among them, Joyce Carol Oates (shown signing above), Margaret Atwood, Alice Hoffman, Adrienne Rich, Maxine Hong Kingston, mystery writers Denise Mina, Ann Cleeves, Sue Grafton, M.C. Beaton and others.
Shep has been a science fiction fan since he was a boy and we have thousands of science fiction magazines and pulps in addition to our science fiction and fantasy and horror first editions. Authors range from classic writers like Robert Heinlein, to more modern authors like Neal Stephenson and Kim Stanley Robinson. Shown above are some of our most collectible books by Isaac Asimov; we also have several books either signed or inscribed by Asimov. Shep and Chris are often at events like the World Science Fiction Convention (where the Hugo Awards are given) - most recently, WorldCon76 in San Jose, California, where Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Larry Niven, L.E. Modesitt and George R. R. Martin were among the attending authors.
Although Bookfever is primarily an online seller, they participate both in antiquarian book fairs and events such as the mystery conventions Bouchercon and Left Coast Crime, and they welcome visitors to their store - Books Upstairs - #5 on historic Main Street in the gold rush town of Jackson, California. Bookfever offers free US shipping, international shipping priced at actual cost, free gift wrapping in traditional paper or reusable cloth, careful packing and very personalized service.
