About this Item

First appearance of this pattern book, a cornerstone text of the eighteenth century architect-builder. 16mo: 24pp, with engraved frontispiece and 99 numbered plates (no. 72 provided in perfect facsimile on laid paper). Beautifully bound in period-style full speckled calf by Fitterer, boards framed with double gilt fillets, spine in five compartments between raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco lettering piece gilt, end papers renewed. Fine, square, tight binding, text clean and bright with rich impressions of the plates. Provenance: in script to the front fly leaf, "Isaac Walfords Book / Stowey [?] 10th May 1815." Archer 377.1. Goldsmiths'-Kress library of economic literature 7825.1. ESTC Citation No. T66029. Rare (only 2000 copies printed) both in institutional holdings and in commerce: ESTC lists only six copies, three in England and three in North America, and ABPC shows no copy at auction in the past 30 years. Langley's books were enormously influential in the American colonies, and Washington drew upon plate 75 of The Builder's Jewel for the rusticated wood siding at Mount Vernon. Langley was thought to be an important Freemason; the frontispiece contains many examples of Masonic symbolism found in the first three degrees of Freemasonry. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
