About this Item

A frequently reprinted work, first published in 1673. Robert Barclay (1648?1690) is largely known for his defense of Quaker principles in his greatest work, The Apology. Title continues: "Which containeth a true and faithful Account of the Principles and Doctrines, which are most surely believed by the Churches of Christ in Great Britain and Ireland, who are reproachfully called by the name of Quakers; yet are found in the one faith with the Primitive Church and Saints, as is most clearly demonstrated by some plain Scripture Testimonies, (without Consequences or Commentaries) which are here collected, and inserted by way of Answer to a few weighty, yet easy and familiar Questions, fitted as well for the wisest and largest, as for the weakest and lowest Capacities. To which is added, an expostulation with, and appeal to, all other professors." Includes, "The ancient testimony of the people called Quakers, revived; by the order and approbation of the Yearly Meeting, held for the provinces of Pennsylvania and New-Jersey, 1722." on p. 34 to end with separate title page. Early provenance: Front endpaper inscribed: "This Book belongs to Huntington Meeting No. 6." 12mo. viii, 147, [3], 34 pp. Evans 20950; ESTC W37335. Original sheep, rubbed, worn over spine, joints, and corners; back joint starting. Spotting and staining. Front endpaper somewhat tattered. Bookseller Inventory # 12950
