With 1 full-page hand-coloured woodcut and 10 half-page hand-coloured woodcuts. Original printed wrappers, fragile with a few chips, re-sewn at spine in a cross-stitch, a few minor spots to wrappers; some occasional interior spots, as well as some light off-setting from woodcuts. Ownership inscription of Henry C. Trumbull, given to him from a Miss Allen. First edition of this delightful book of children's rhymes, many imparting a moral lesson. Titles include The young scholar; The young gardener; and The good child. Smith (1797-1877), the father of eight children, was an American surgeon and professor of anatomy and surgery. He attended Yale University, and though always attracted to literature, he completed his medical degree, studying under his father. He established a medical school at the University of Vermont, where at the age of 27 he became professor of anatomy and physiology. Smith made great contributions to the field of surgery, wrote several papers on the management of fractures, and devised a splint for the use of fractures of the femur which was heavily used during the Civil War. Trumbull (1830-1903) was an Orientalist who wrote several works of considerable influence, including Kadeshbarnea; Studies in Oriental Social life; The blood covenant; and The threshold covenant.
