About this Item

With 5 text woodcuts. Original cloth, covers lightly worn, insignificant crack at spine. Generally an excellent copy, but lacking the 2 plates. Inscribed by the author to the German surgeon Johannes Friedrich August von Esmarch (1823-1908). First edition. The present work is a well-documented discussion of congenital syphilis, one of several works Hutchinson produced on the subject. He is well known for "Hutchinson's triad," a group of three conditions which, occurring together, are "pathognomonic of syphilis. He called attention to the peg-shaped notched teeth of hereditary syphilis (Hutchinson's teeth), to the chronic keratitis of syphilitic children, and to the deafness produced by hereditary syphilitic middle ear disease" (Pusey, pp. 128-30). Hutcinson (1828-1913) made numerous original observations in the areas of congenital syphilis and skin diseases. He was surgeon to London Hospital and later the Royal College of Surgeons. "His writings reveal an encyclopedic mind conversant with virtually every area of medicine and one able to communicate effectively" (Eimas). Bookseller Inventory # 4918
