Description:

Fourth edition. Lowth (1660-1732), a noted theologian in his era, "effectively summarized the most advanced orthodox ideas of post-Restoration churchmen in his commentaries, which treated Israelite prophecy as foreshadowing the teaching of Christ and the history of the church" (ODNB). His interest in prophets and prophecy is manifest in this work, his continuation of Simon Patrick's commentaries on a various books or the Old Testament. The work was originally published in separate portions between 1714 and 1725. Here it is printing in roman with some italic and Greek fonts, in double-column format, with woodcut culs de lampe and tailpieces and an excellent and large engraved headpiece at the beginning of each of the four commentaries, signed "M. Vdr. Gucht." i.e, Michael Vandergucht (1660?1725), a Flemish engraver who worked for most of his career in England. Folio extra (35 cm; 17"). [2] ff., iv, 540 pp. ESTC T113680. Contemporary speckled calf, scuffed at edges, front joint (outside) cracked but board firmly attached, spine darkened Ex-theological library with bookplate but no stamps. A very good copy. The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
