About this Item

including half-title and index. Original printer wrappers, very lightly soiled, some small chips to front and at extremities of spine, front wrapper detached; first few gatherings loose. An uncut copy with the presentation inscription from the author's son on the half-title. First edition of this fascinating look into the maladies of the French aristocracy. Menière (1799-1862) was a French physician who first described the symptoms of the inner ear disorder now known as Menière's disease. When not practicing, Menière spent his time going over early literary works, researching references to medicine. He published much of his research in the Gazette médicale de Paris. The present work, which represents extensive research done upon the correspondence of the Marquise de Sévigné (1626-96), was first printed in the Gazette in 1862. Before his death that same year, Menière asked his son Émile to have the work printed as a book, which was done in 1864. Émile Menière (1839-1905), an otologist who followed in his father's footsteps, becoming chief physician at the Institut des Sourds-Muets, supplied the dedication and introduction. Osler, 5141.
