The Nestorian Stele (also known as the Nestorian Stone, Nestorian Monument, or Nestorian Tablet) is a Tang Chinese stele erected in 781 that documents 150 years of early Christianity in China. It is a 279 cm tall limestone block with text in both Chinese and Syriac describing the existence of Christian communities in several cities in northern China, revealing that the initial Nestorian Christian church had met recognition by the Tang Emperor Taizong, due to efforts of the Christian missionary Alopen in 635. Buried in 845, probably during religious suppression, the stele was not rediscovered until 1625. Full physical, i.e., ?3-D? copies of it exist in several places; the first was made in the late 19th century and exhibited for some time in New York, then sent eventually to Rome; and a copy of that copy exists at Georgetown University, in Washington. There is another copy in China and one in Japan, with another in Berlin. The document in hand presents the stele?s text on heavy mulberry paper and appears to have been produced by photolithography, although some sources of the 1930s described it ? when held by the Pacific School of Religion, from which we acquired it ? as being a rubbing. The nine characters that on the stone appear centered above the main "text" in three rows of three are here rearranged and presented as one horizontal band, probably to allow everything to fit on the allotted paper. We do not know from which object our image was taken, although, to us, the mulberry paper suggests an Asian origin for the document, and what we know of other early 20th-century donations to PSR support that as very possible. We find no sign of any library's owning this particular reproduction of the stele's "contents," nor could we find auction or other records of previous appearances on the market, although other images of the stone in other "versions" are to be found online and in libraries. Folio extra (231.2 cm x 95.3 cm; 91" x 37.5"). [1] f. Overall very good with some small fold tears. A most impressive item. Bookseller Inventory #
