About this Item

Includes information about the progress of Westernization of Japan, of the Unitarian church, of the school it operated, etc., and accounts of ten early Japanese Unitarians: Kinza Hirai (1859??), Zennosuke Toyosaki (1863??), Yoshio Ogasawara (1868?1945), Saichiro Kanda (1863??), Jitsungen Saji (1856??), Nobuta Kishimoto (1865?1928), Tomoji Murai (no dates), Genshiro Noguchi (no dates), Isoo Abe (1865?1949), and Saburo Shimada (1852?1923). There is a half-tone photo of each of the men, most wearing western garb ? but not all. The wrappers are pretty here, their "japonesque" design involving a fan and flowers. A full-page half-tone photo of the large and handsome "Unity Hall," with a number of men and children in front of it, precedes the text. Provenance: Ownership stamp of William Channing Gannett, noted Unitarian minister and hymn writer. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only four copies in U.S. libraries. Oblong 12mo (16 x 22 cm). Frontis., 67, [1] pp., [1] f. Original light green illustrated wrappers, lightly dust-soiled; original black cord threading. As above, Gannett's ownership stamp (with address) lightly on front wrapper. Very good. Bookseller Inventory # 35469
