About this Item

[Jackson, Charles Thomas (1805-80)]. Lord, Joseph L. and Henry C. Lord. A defence of Dr. Charles T. Jackson's claims to the discovery of etherization. 37pp. Boston: Office of Littell's Living Age, 1848. 262 x 175 mm. (uncut). Original printed wrappers, back wrapper slightly stained. Edges a bit frayed, otherwise a fine copy. First Separate Edition of one of the many pieces published during the famous "Ether Controversy" over who deserved the credit for discovering ether anesthesia. Joseph and Henry Lord's Defence of Charles Jackson's claim was first published as an article in the periodical Littell's Living Age under the title "The Ether Discovery"; the separate edition contains an appendix that was not included in the periodical version. The two Lords, both Boston attorneys, collected testimony showing that Jackson, rather than his rival W. T. G. Morton, was the true discoverer of ether anesthesia. Fulton & Stanton, Surgical Anesthesia, p. 71. Wolfe, Tarnished Idol, pp. 192-200. Bookseller Inventory # 2118
