4to., pp. [iv] + 203; later three-quarter calf and marbled paper boards, lightly rubbed; later endpapers; internally clean. Errata at Dd2r. An early English Separatist, Robinson (1576-1625) was the pastor of the "Pilgrim Fathers" at Pieterskerk in Leiden. Together with Robert Browne, he is considered one of the founders of the Congregational Church. In this work he sides with the "contra-Remonstrants" in rejecting Arminianism. The Synod, held at Dordrecht in 1618-1619, convened to settle the Arminian controversy and set forth the Reformed doctrine on each of five crucial points, including "total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement., irresistible (or irrevocable) grace, and the perseverance of the saints." A rare book: WorldCat locates only twelve copies. No auction records found at Rare Book Hub or ABPC, though a copy was offered in a 1922 Quaritch catalog for just over 12 GBP (noted at Rare Book Hub). Robinson's Defence of the doctrine propounded by the Synode at Dort was published after a small minority of Pilgrims left Holland for America in 1620. A rare, desirable tract by a highly influential English Separatist theologian. Bookseller Inventory #
