About this Item

With 35 text engravings. Full brown morocco, decorated in blind and gilt, with gilt dentelles; first 2 blank leaves detached. From the library of James Hale Bates with his engraved bookplate on the paste-down. A nostalgic pastoral that shows Goldsmith's disillusionment with rural life. "The illustrations in this volume are copied, with permission, from a series of Etchings published some years since by the 'Etching Club.' Only a few impressions of that work were printed, the copper plates were destroyed, and the book, except in a very expensive form, has long been unattainable. Great care has been taken to render the present Wood-blocks as like the original Etchings as the different methods of engraving will allow." Formed in 1838 by a group of professional artists to promote etching as a vital contemporary art form, the Etching Club included such important Victorian painters as Richard Redgrave, Charles West Cope, John Callcott Horsley, and William Holman Hunt.
