Description:

First Spanish-language edition of Jesuit writer Segneri's work of Mariology "Il Divoto di Maria Vergine istruito ne' motivi, e ne' mezzi che lo conducono a ben servirla." The translation is the work of Juan de Espinola Baeza Echaburu, translator of several of Segneri's writings. "El espejo que no enga?a" and "La verdadera sabiduria" are translations from the Italian of works by Giovanni Pietro Pinamonti. The volume is dedicated to "la Ilustre . . . Senora D. Fausta Maria Fernandez del Campo." This is probably the wife of the Marques de Adeje. Segneri resonated well with the Spanish reading populace: Many of his works were translated and many of those translations were reprinted in several editions. Provenance: Early 18th-century signature of "Do[cto]r Aldave" on the half-title. In a later18th-century hand, "Si este libro se perdiere como puede suceder suplico a quien se lo [h]allare que me lo sepa volver. Miguel Delgadillo" on the verso of the rear free endpaper. WorldCat and NUC Pre-1956 locate only three copies of this edition in U.S. libraries. 4to (20.5 cm; 8.125"). [12] ff., 235, [5], [237]-401, [3] pp. DeBacker-Sommervogel, VII, 1065; Palau 305871. Contemporary limp vellum with slightly yapp edges; evidence of ties. Foxing. One pin-hole type wormhole in text, touching a letter on each page; meander worming in inner margins, removed from text.
