Second (1968) printing of this facsimile, small folio, pp. plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; original cloth in tan pictorial dust jacket printed in red and black (slightly soiled); a few short tears along jacket edges not affecting text, else about fine. The second French-English dictionary and the first of consequence. Of Cotgrave little is known. DNB has an abbreviated and not very useful entry and there is little in the way of surviving manuscript materials about him. Nonetheless, the work "has become the chief lexicographical source of our knowledge about Middle and Renaissance French?" "The most important dictionary of the French Renaissance ? a substantial contribution to the development of dictionary material, not only as to bulk but because a new type of material was established" (Smalley, The Sources of a Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues, Baltimore, 1948).
