About this Item

First edition, slim 8vo, pp. vii, [1], 102, [2]; original dark green morocco-backed cloth boards, gilt-lettered spine, marbled endpapers; bottom quarter of spine perished, bookplate; a good, sound copy. Prompted by Frederick J. Furnivall and Dean Trench, the newly formed Philological Society in 1857 set to work on what would become the famed Oxford English Dictionary. Materials began to be gathered, at first to supplement the acknowledged deficiencies in Johnson and Richardson, and later for a complete new work. In 1859 Herbert Coleridge, grandson of the poet, was made editor. He was very active in laying plans for the dictionary and in supervising the gathering of material, but unfortunately died in 1861. He did, however, produce the first two books which led to the creation of the new dictionary: A Glossarial Index to the Printed English Literature of the Thirteenth Century (Trubner, 1859), and this Dictionary of the English words therein three years later.
