About this Item

281 x 226 mm. 4to. Pages 111-131; 234-248. [Entire volume: [iv], 439, [1] pp.] Full brown cloth, gilt spine; lightly rubbed. Ex library blind-stamp of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Very good. FIRST EDITION. "MacMahon's writings are scattered through journals and volumes of transactions of scientific societies, covering a period of nearly fifty years. While they adhere closely to combinatory analysis, that department of abstract algebra which his genius so conspicuously developed, they continually show the writer to be no isolated philosopher. 'I do not believe in any branch of science being destitute of connexion with other branches,' he said at a meeting of the British Association in Glasgow (1901). This isolation was particularly characteristic of a certain tract of pure mathematics which appeared to be in a 'forlorn condition.' The timeliness of MacMahon's masterly rescue of this department, which includes problems of the nature of the magic squares of the ancients, has become the more evident as the twentieth century has advanced, in its capital significance for the theory of groups and the quantum theory." - DNB.
