Second edition. William Sherlock (ca. 1641?1707), the Dean of St. Paul's from 1691, was noted for his engagement in numerous paper wars. The DNB quotes South as saying of Sherlock that "There is hardly any one subject he has wrote upon (that of popery only excepted) but he has wrote for and against it too." Printed in roman and italic with one large handsome factotum initial (folio A2) and similarly floriated large woodcut initial (folio B1). Errata (folio Eee1v) and advertisements at the end. Provenance: Edouard Wyndham, Esq., London, April 15th 1832, by care of the Lord T. Kyne (ink inscription to front pastedown); George Stanhope D.D. Dean of Canterbury (his armorial bookplate, title verso); bookplate of an Ohio theological library; another bookplate, covered by Ohio's; Ambrose Swasey Library (stamp, title page and bottom edge). 4to (20 cm, 7.88"). [iv] ff., 394, [2] pp. ESTC R4190 ("With final advertisement leaf"); Wing (rev. ed.) S3287. On Sherlock, see: Dictionary of National Biography. Contemporary blind tooled speckled calf, with red speckled edges and red leather lettering piece to spine. Upper joint cracked, the other starting, extremities rubbed and bumped exposing the bands at spine ends. Worming in two places near the gutter affecting catchwords throughout, diminishing after quire G; holes from natural paper flaws at folios Xx1 and Eee1; one small hole from a stain in the gutter at folio Tt4; and minor stains (from oil?) at folios M2, Z4, Hh1, Ddd4, Zzz1.
