My Story

Harry Potters, Texas (pictured aged 7)

Harry from Texas

Harry P Potters, a former mathematics teacher from Texas, always clearly pronounces the S at the end of his surname when calling up to reserve a restaurant table.

"A lot of people ask me about my name," said Harry. "Especially when calling a restaurant or filling in a form. Harry Potter is just a kid from a book and I'm real that's what I always tell them. The lady who wrote the books simply created a character.

"People say: 'Hey, aren't you the guy from that kids' book?' and I have to tell them that there is an S on the end of my name and that's a big difference."

Having almost the same name as the world's most famous literary character hardly affects Harry because he is busy developing his own writing career. Last year, he wrote and self-published a children's book called Tory: The Little Dust Devil.

"It's all about a dust devil that comes to life and helps a little kid called Jim have lots of adventures," he said. "The kid is a bit of a nerd and the dust devil helps Jim to time travel they go back and see the dinosaurs. Tory helps Jim win a football game and comes to the rescue when he is picked on by bullies.

"We get lots of dust devils down here in Texas, where we have a very hot climate, and that's what inspired me to write the book. I hope to publish an illustrated version of the book this year."

His wide range of skills has extended to writing a mathematics books and also a screenplay for a movie called Chronicle of a Homie. After spending many years in teaching, Harry now makes a living from making children's videos, featuring puppet characters, which are shown in schools. "Worms are the main characters," he said. "It's a lot of fun."

"My latest project is TV show," he explained. "I got together with some TV friends and it's going to be like Saturday Night Live lots of comedy. Hopefully, we can get the show broadcast around Texas."
