About this Item

Statement of three U. S. Navy officers to the House Committee of Naval Affairs opposing the petition of Texas Navy officers to their transfer into the U. S. Navy at the same rank. Signed in type: "Franklin Buchanan, Commander U. S. Navy. S. F. DuPont . . . George A. Macgruder . . ." The appendix (pp. 11?15) consists of letters and orders relating to Texas Navy Captain Edwin W. W. Moore, the ship Austin and brig Wharton, with their crews, and bring them or any of them into the port of Galveston, that the vessels may be secured to the Republic and the culprit or culprits arraigned and punished by the sentence of a legal tribunal." An important document of the Texas Republic, relating to issues of Navy officer corporate spirit and civilian control over the military. 8vo. 15 pp. Removed from a nonce volume. Pages 11?15 detached. Old fold-marks across center and two shallow dog-ears. Several instances of marginal notations and corrections, neatly written in ink and pencil. Bookseller Inventory # 24817
