Diplomatic correspondence relating to the Aroostook War (February?March 1839), the boundary dispute between Maine and New Brunswick which almost resulted in armed conflict. Mediation by Winfield Scott in March of that year prevented bloodshed. Documents include the instructions given to Scott by Secretary of War J. R. Poinsett, and letters from Scott, Major R. M. Kirby, Lieutenant Governor Sir John Harvey, Governor John Fairfield, and others, dating from 28 February 1839 to 24 May 1839. Government document: 26th Congress, 1st Session. Doc. No. 169.
