About this Item

An early document "back to Africa" movement. The Society for the Colonizing of Free People of Colour of the United States was established in 1816 and petitioned Congress to help it in its goals. This report on that petition concerns the feasibility of negotiating with Great Britain to establish a colony of free blacks in Sierra Leone. The question of a colony established by the U.S. is dismissed at that time. Government document: House document (United States. Congress. House); 14th Congress, 2nd session, no. 78. Printed at head of title: [78]. 8vo. 5 pp. Shaw & Shoemaker 42738; Library Company, Afro-Americana (rev. ed.), 10602. Removed from a nonce volume. Irregular inner margin. Light foxing. Lightly pencilled librarian's notation on p. [1]. Bookseller Inventory # 18440
