About this Item

Large compilation of documents relating to Dorr's rebellion. In 1841 and 1842, dissidents, led by Thomas Wilson Dorr, sought to write the state's first constitution and establish a new government. To that time the state operated under the colonial charter, with such provisions as allowing enfranchisement to less than half of the male population. Dorr's efforts were labelled "rebellion" by the government established under the old charter. Government documents: 28th Congress, 1st Session. Rep. No. 546. Ho. of Reps. Provenance: Bookplate of Henry D. Gilpin on front pastedown. Gilpin was the U.S. Attorney General who argued the Amistad case. 8vo. 1075 pp. Sabin 70725. Half sheep over paper boards, spine gilt-stamped; leather rubbed and much abraded, back joint starting, head and foot of spine and spine label chipped; two holes in inner margin, never touching text. Remnants of paper label adhered to top margin of first page. Light spotting and staining to endpapers and several pages. Pp. 807-808 torn, without loss of text. A few dog-ears.
