About this Item

16mo, pp. 94; A-F8; woodcut initials, printer's ornaments; early 20th-century brown cloth, upper cover lettered in gilt, new endpapers; title page mounted and laid down, pages brittle and chipped along edges, worming to upper fore-edge touching a few letters without loss of meaning; extensive underlining and manuscript marginalia in a contemporary hand throughout; nevertheless, a good, sound copy. One of many editions. "Duties" was originally published in 1583, and reissued six times from 1584 to 1610, when it was posthumously enlarged. Lambarde, a historian from Kent, had been chosen as bencher of Lincoln's Inn from 1587-9, of which he first wrote in his "Eirenarcha" (1581); "Duties" was originally published as a continuation of this earlier work.
