About this Item

First edition of the author's first book, 12mo, pp. 234; touch of foxing but a fine copy in original brown cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Elisha Reynolds Potter's copy, with his ownership signature on the flyleaf crossed out by Rowland Hazard, a subsequent owner whose signature is on the half-title. Potter (1811-1882) was a Rhode Island congressman, educator, and jurist; Hazard (1801-1888) was a philologist and manufacturer of woolens in Rhode Island and his book Language: Its Connexion with the Present Condition and Future Prospects of Man (1836) was inspired by Sarah Helen Whitman and noticed favorably by William Ellery Channing. See DAB for both. Bledsoe, for his part, was a West Point graduate and a fellow student of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, and later a professor of mathematics and French, and later still, a colonel in the confederate army, and Jefferson Davis's assistant secretary of war. In 1867 he became the founder and first editor of the Southern Review, and was long an advocate for southern causes. The present book is a response to Jonathan Edwards' Careful and Strict Enquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions of that Freedom of Will, Boston, 1754. Bookseller Inventory # 21742
