In this expanded version of his lecture given at Cambridge, MA in 1932, Eddington summarizes his own theories based upon ideas originally put forth by George Lemaitre, the first scientist to suggest creation of the universe by what has became known as the "Big Bang Theory." Eddington penned several related works in this period, described as "pathways to new ideas and adventures in thinking" (DSB).Eddington (1882-1944), a lifelong Quaker, was educated at Owens College (now University of Manchester) and Trinity College, Cambridge. He did pioneering work in astrophysics, fashioning "powerful mathematical tools and . . . [applying] them with imagination and consummate skill."
