About this title

From Booklist:

Gr. 3-5. Basing her biography in part on the storyteller's The Fairy Tale of My Life: An Autobiography, Burch shows how Andersen, a cobbler's son, grew from an awkward boy to an accomplished writer of international renown. The book concentrates on his childhood, education, and development as a writer. Only the final chapter concerns the fairy tales and the last half of his life. Ten black-and-white silhouettes by Liz Monson illustrate the book. Far from the elegant style usually associated with silhouettes, the clunkiness and vitality of these illustrations recalls the paper cuttings that Andersen often made while telling his stories aloud. Written with simplicity and many concrete details, the book provides a good introduction for those needing report material or for children who simply want to know more about the man behind the fairy tales.
