Recent blue paper wrappers, with title block mounted on cover. Spine slightly askew. This volume of Abstracts was published to accompany the Parliamentary Acts for 27 George II (1754). The Abstracts convey the essence of each law, complete with marginal references to the page numbers of the first edition folio printings of the Acts. Of particular interest is the Abstract of the Jewish Naturalization Repeal Act, 1754 which repealed the named ACT of the previous parliamentary session that allowed certain persons affirming the Jewish religion to be naturalized by Parliament without receiving the sacrament. The legislation aroused a political storm and wave of intense anti-Semitism in London. Activists and anti-Jewish pamphleteers considered the ACT to be a serious threat to Christianity in England, and pointed to the New Testament and its passages that implied that Jews must wander the Earth. Newspapers opened their columns to named and anonymous correspondents, and devoted space in editorials to consider the Jewish Question. Dozens of satirical works were published in response to the controversy. Merchants of London forecasted a negative impact to foreign trade as a result of the new law. It was alleged that the Act would reduce the consumption of ham and bacon, and that under it the Jews would become so numerous as to exclude Protestants from all offices, trades, and professions. Wealthy Jews, it was feared, would settle in the country, purchase all the estates, and influence the elections. Jews were insulted and attacked in public, and cries of "No Jews, No Wooden Shoes" echoed in the streets. Under intense public pressure, the legislation was reviewed when Parliament reconvened at the beginning of the next session, and was repealed in its entirety. This volume also contains other interesting Abstracts of Acts on a variety of financial, legal, military, and commercial topics.
