The first edition of this work.The first series of David Wooster's impressive study on the botanical life of the Alps, an important work on the subject.This is a beautiful look at the flora of the alpine regions, strikingly exampled by beautiful and colourful plates.Illustrated with a chromolithograph frontispiece, and fifty-three chromolithograph plates.Collated, complete.The plates were drawn by Francis Lydon and lithographed by Benjamin Fawcett.Gift inscription to the verso of the front endpaper, dated Christmas 1872. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with light rubbing to the spine and extremities, and lighter rubbing to the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities, with a small amount of loss to the head and tail of the spine. Small tears to the joints. A few small marks to the cloth. Front hinge is starting but firm. Gift inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots. Good. book. The attractive plates, several of which are of lady's slipper orchids, were printed by Fawcett of Driffield from paintings by Lydon. The two volumes constitute the complete set, each volume being issued separately, the first volume being successful it was decided to issue a second series, which is why most sets found are with the second edition of the first volume.
