Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book challenges conventional notions of home design and decoration prevalent at the turn of the 20th century. The author, a practicing architect, critiques the uninspired and often impractical house designs of the time, advocating for a return to simplicity, functionality, and true artistic expression. He emphasizes the importance of considering the needs and individuality of the occupants when designing a house, rather than conforming to societal expectations and trends. He further argues that beauty should be an integral part of everyday life, not merely an afterthought or superficial embellishment. The book delves into various aspects of home design, including room layout, furniture, and decoration. It encourages the use of natural materials, handcrafted elements, and bespoke furniture that complements the specific function and character of each room. The author's vision extends beyond mere aesthetics, advocating for homes that foster a more authentic and fulfilling way of life. By embracing simplicity, functionality, and artistic integrity, this book suggests that we can create homes that are not only beautiful but also conducive to personal growth and well-being. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9780243417537_0

Second edition (issued in the same year as the first). Signed and inscribed by Raymond Unwin to Herbert Arthur Welch. Octavo. Publisher's original green cloth with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine. Top edge gilt. 133pp. + 68 black and white plates, comprising plans, drawings, and photographs. A good copy, the binding with cracking to the front hinge (although remaining secure), fading to the spine, and a touch of wear to the spine ends. The contents with some scattered foxing and light finger-marking to the preliminary pages are otherwise in very good order. Signed and inscribed by Raymond Unwin to Herbert Arthur Welch in black ink to the front endpaper: "To H.A. Welch from R. Unwin / In acknowledgement of valuable / services rendered during the / commencement of the Hampstead / Garden Suburb & with best / wishes for a successful career". A collection of essays and illustrations applying the ideals of the Arts and Crafts Movement to the construction and design of domestic homes by the influential architects and urban planners Raymond Unwin (1863-1940) and Richard Barry Parker (1867-1947). A disciple of John Ruskin and William Morris, a close friend of Edward Carpenter, and a member of the Socialist League, Labour Church, and Sheffield Socialist Society, Unwin emerged as one of the leading architects of the Arts and Crafts Movement. In collaboration with Parker, the pair most notably worked on the design of a model village at New Earswick near York for Joseph and Benjamin Seebohm Rowntree (1902), Letchworth Garden City, based on the ideas of Ebenezer Howard (1903), and Hampstead Garden Suburb (1905). The present book was gifted by Unwin to the architect Herbert Arthur Welch (1884-1953), who was engaged by Unwin and Parker to work on the development of Hampstead Garden Suburb in 1908. Welch designed many houses in the suburb, including Wordsworth Walk and Coleridge Walk, as well as the gabled work in Denman Drive. He also designed the handsome curved terraces of shops and apartments in Golders Green Road that demonstrate the early twentieth-century change of style from vernacular revival to Neo-Georgian. He later established an independent practice in London, collaborating with Frederick Etchells (the translator of Le Corbusier's works into English), Nugent Francis Cachemaille-Day, and Felix J. Lander, in the design of the pioneering modernist International Modern Crawford's Office Building in High Holborn (1930). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1924 and was awarded the London Architecture Medal in 1933. A wonderful association copy. Seller Inventory # 1342
