First edition with Charles Scribner's Sons-A-on copyright page along with Scribner calaphon. Book is in Near Fine condition, straight, clean pages, has been read. Fore edge deckle (unlike my other copy which is trimmed and this copy also weighs 1 oz more than the other). Cloth covered boards are clean. Spine lettering and ruling intact gilt. Dust jacket, priced $3.00, is very good plus. Spine head and tail have some small chipping, modest wrinkling. Back panel, Hemingway photo by Paul Radkai. Yellow coloration used on spine, vrs. use of orange on cover. Now in a protective cover. 308 pages. Set in Venice at the close of World War II, The novel begins in Trieste, during the last day in the life of the protagonist, Colonel Cantwell. Across the River and into the Trees is the bittersweet story of that middle-aged American colonel, scarred by war and in failing health, who finds love with a young Italian countess at the very moment when his life is becoming a physical hardship to him.
