An album with 48 photogravure plates in sepia, with captions in English and French, of Aleppo and surroundings. The plates show the great buildings of the city (the citadel, the Zakariye mosque, the El-Atrouche mosque, etc.), and street scenes, like bazars, vaulted streets, the camel market, narghileh smokers, an Arab peasant drinking coffee, the glowing interior of a coppersmith's shop, etc. Vartan Derounian was an Armenian photographer born in Arapkir (Turkey). After the Armenian genocide of 1915-17 he emigrated to Aleppo and there established a photo studio. He became best known for his photographs of Armenian refugees in Aleppo. On the rear wrapper a drawing of his studio, grand atelier photographique muni de tous les perfectionnements modernes'.
