First Edition. Octavo. XI, 223 pages. Illustrated with twelve beautiful colour plates by Adolph Birkenruth. Original, illustrated Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Name of preowner on halftitle. Illustrator Adolph Birkenruth was born in 1861 in Grahamstown, South Africa. His father was a Prussian diamond broker, the mother came from Frankfurt, which is where the family moved back in the 1860s. There Birkenruth attended the University and further studied in Paris. In the 1880s he moved to London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy. In addition, he used to work as an illustrator for several magazines, including the Black & White weekly or the London News.
