First edition. Illustrated by Margaret Ayers. Modest wear at the spine ends and a couple of very lightly sunned spots on the spine, a very good or better copy save that it lacks the rear flyleaf, thus about very good in a heavily toned, good only dust jacket with loss at the folds and spine ends, and a large hole in the spine. Landon's dramatized account of Anna Leonowens's tenure as governess at the court of Siam, based on Leonowens's own writings. This account was the basis for the 1946 John Cromwell-directed film featuring Irene Dunn and Rex Harrison; the 1956 musical version by Rodgers and Hammerstein, *The King and I,* directed by Walter Lang and featuring Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner; and the 1999 *Anna and the King* directed by Andy Tennant, and featuring Jodie Foster and Yun-Fat Chow.
