Similar To Uk Issue Described By Quinby, P. 86, As"Another Copy Of No. 23", With Paste-On Cover Illustration Of A Lady Mouse; However, Unlike The Quinby American Issue, 23B, Possibly An Unrecorded Earlier Variant, Points Earlier Than Quinby's "American Edition" 23B, And Even Some Points Earlier Than Quinby's Uk First Issue #23: Front And Rear Endpapers Are The Same, With List Of Potter's Books On Left, Designs Like Quinby Plate Xii Linder Figure 11 But With Addition Of Words "First Series" Before First 12 Titles In List And "Second Series" Before Next Two Titles [Quinby Shows Plates Xii And Xiv For #23, The Uk First, And Quinby Xv For The First American Edition]; 9 Of Her Characters In Illustration At Right; Endpapers Same At Front And Back [Quinby Stating That Her Copy Of The American Issue Used Plate Xv Endpapers, Which Are Quite Different]. No Illustration Of These Endpapers In Quinby Or Linder But Quinby Mentions American Issues Only In Passing And Linder Does Not Address Them At All. Bright, Clean, Hinges Tight, Small Split At Bottom Of Front Spine Edge Professionally Repaired. Exceptionally Well Preserved Example Of This Book. Ownership Inscription On Blank Recto Of Frontispiece, Dated April 26, 1919 (There Were First And Second Printings Of The Uk Issue In 1917, The Third Printing Was In 1920). This Printing May Be The Only Use Of These Endpapers In Any Beatrix Potter Book.
