Limited edition of 200 numbered copies. Quarter leather wand cloth, top edge gilt, others uncut 4to, [vi], xxxii, 47, [9] pp, 60 plates. 12 entries. Breydenbach's account of his journey to the Holy Land was the first to include illustrations of the places seen en route and was strikingly successful: between 1486 and 1522 at least 12 illustrated editions were published. The artist was Erhard Reuwich of Utrecht. "One of the most interesting parts of [Charles Fairfax Murray's] collection was a complete set of the various editions of Bernhard von Breydenbach and his Journey to the Holy Land 1483-4, first published in 1486. This is a fascinating work, and adventure story to rank alongside the voyages of Marco Polo, describing in the first person the adventures of the German Bernhard and a number of companions along the way from his n in Bavaria to the monastery of' St Catherine in the Sinai desert. It was a great popular success and much sought-after from the day of its publication, and Bernhard von. Breydenbach came to be translated and reprinted in French, German and Spanish.
