That they would sing your praises? - Sartre in "Black Orpheus" Anthologie de la Nouvelle Poésie Nègre et Malgache de Langue Française (Anthology of New Black and Malagasy Poetry in French)- Léopold Sédar-Senghor introduced with the first appearance of Jean-Paul Sartre's essay Orphée Noir (Black Orpheus), One of only twenty large copies on vellum paper, hors commerce, published by Presses Universities de France, Part 1 of the Colonies and Empires Fifth Series: Art and Literature, Paris 1948 Printed wraps, 8vo, pp. xliv, 227, [1]; Near fine condition, unopened, in a near fine, presumed original, glassine jacket, a small bit of writing in pencil to the top right corner of the glassine jacket has left an impression on the front cover underneath, a few small raised impressions to the front cover, lightly toned. A defining anthology of the Négritude movement published to commemorate the centennial of the 1848 French revolution which would abolish slavery in the French colonies. Prefaced by the first appearance of Sartre's essay "Black Orpheus" which would help define and spread wide recognition of the movement. The collection contains contributions from 16 authors across the French-African diaspora including Senghor, Aime Cesaire, León Damas, et al. Rare as one would expect with such a limitation, I trace only one other copy of the limited edition appearing at auction in 2013 which was inscribed from Senghor to Sartre.
