xvi, 376 pages of text. Full leather binding, expertly rebacked with raised bands and gilt double-ruling, with date stamped at bottom of the spine, and original gilt-stamped spine label reapplied. Original polished calf boards with double-ruled border, and pattern stamped in blind. Moderate wear to edges of original boards. Marbled paper paste downs and end sheets; most likely replaced during rebacking. Illustrated on the dedication page with an engraved head-piece and initial by P. Foudrinier, and by three fold-out plates. Discreetly affixed to the verso of the title page is the engraved armorial bookplate of William Sedgwick (1698-1760), stating "B.D. Queens College Cambridge". Extra-illustrated with two suites of two modern (post-1900) black & white facsimile portraits of Newton, each bound in on separate tabs. Minor soiling and minor browning to the title page; the text is clean, unmarked, and is well-margined. Page height measures 9 inches (228mm). First edition.
