64 pp. Includes 16 b/w plates from pencil drawings by George H[olbrook]. Baker. 6-1/4" x 4-1/4" Josiah Keep was a Natural Science teacher at Alameda High School, later becoming a professor at Mills College. From the Preface: "This little book grew out of a need, felt by the author, of a cheap and convenient manual of the more common shells found on the coast of California. . . . The work does not aim to describe all the Mollusks found on our shore, but treats especially of those common varieties which may be sought, with a reasonable hope of finding them for study and collection." Moderate wear; light spotting to page block and endpapers; gift bookplate to institution tipped-in at fpd; hinges lightly split (binding cords intact); horizontal closed tear to lower margin of last two leaves and rear endpaper.
