First edition, 8vo, pp. xii, 398; 12 plates (2 wood engravings, 10 lithographs, 2 folding) plus several other illustrations in the text; bound without the ads in recent half tan calf over marbled boards, black morocco labels on gilt-decorated spines; one folding plate with a short split at one fold, faint library pressure stamp on title page and page 1; all else near fine, sound, and clean. "Adventures and observations of the British commercial mission to the Court of the Emir of Kabul in 1837-38. But the Mission to Kabul failed, and in 1839 Burnes re-entered Kabul with the invading British troops. In 1841 Burnes and Macnaghten were murdered, and some 4500 troops and more than 12,000 camp-followers were killed in January 1842 when attempting to retreat to India" (Yakushi).
