First edition, 8vo, pp. [8], 11-233, [1]; map endpapers, frontispiece, 18 illustrations from photographs on 1 plates; fine copy in original yellow cloth, gilt-stamped spine. Louis Magrath King (1886-1949), born at Jiujiang, Jiangxi, China, was "appointed as a British Consul at Dartsedo (Kangding, Sichuan, China) in 1913, which was then a trading town on the border between the Chinese Empire and Tibet. King was the son of Paul Henry King, a Commissioner in the Chinese Customs Service, and writer Margaret Williamson King (known to her family as Veronica King) . King was married to Rinchen Lhamo, author of We Tibetans (London, 1926). Lhamo came from a respected family in Kham, East Tibet. The couple probably met sometime around 1919-1922, and were officially married in 1923. Theirs is often described as probably the first Tibetan-British marriage" (Wikipedia). Seller Inventory # 67878

The author was born in China and served as a British consular official. Deeply engaged with Chinese affairs in the early twentieth century, this book offers a firsthand account of the country?s upheavals during a period of revolutionary ferment; it presents a vivid narrative drawn from King?s own experiences and observations while stationed in various parts of China, particularly Tibet and the western provinces. His prose captures the collapse of the Qing dynasty, the rise of warlord factions, and the turbulent efforts toward modernization and national unity, all rendered with a mixture of imperial perspective and genuine admiration for Chinese culture. Endpaper decorated with maps. 233pp. London, Heath Cranton, Louis Magrath King (1886-1949) was born at Jiujiang, China and educated at Chefoo School (Zhifu) as well as Berkhamsted. King who was fluent in Chinese, joined the British China Consular Service in 1905; he was stationed at Kangding (Sichuan prov.), from 1913-1915 and 1919-1922, and famously married a Tibetan lady Rinchen Lhamo. The present is an account of the early phase of the Chinese revolution in Sichuan province where warlords and others were vying for power. King's account is excellent as it focuses on the individuals and their respective strengths and weaknesses. . Seller Inventory # 256413
