First American edition (English sheets with a new title page), 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xl, 456; xiii, [3], 512; 3 color folding maps, 8 double-p. plates, 73 illustrations in the text (many full-p.), from woodcuts, wood-engravings, and photographs; original pictorial blue-gray cloth stamped in gilt, silver and black; some rubbing and wear, 2 of the folding maps crudely torn from the stubs (but present); hinges starting, adhesion mark on rear free endpaper of volume II; all else very good. The author attempted to deliver a letter from the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Dalai Lama in 1888 but failed to reach Lhasa. Instead he visited Leh, Samarkand, Tashkent. Bokhara, Kuldja, Kashgar, Yarkand, Khotan, Kashmir, etc. The appendix lists the mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects, butterflies, and moths collected b the author, and a valuable 38-p. bibliography of Central Asia listing 742 books and maps.
