About this Item

Description:

8vo., 112pp, 280pp, 230pp, Wraps. Sharp Original publications of the first three issues, (of four), of this landmark literary journal with material from some of the most important beat writers of the time including Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who also edited, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and many others, Each issues is square, tight and clean throughout with very gentle edge-wear, Number 1 has a short tear at the crown. Still, a very well-reserved set. Fresh and bright with no chipping or creases and little if any toning. The set came from the library of J.W. "Jake" Erlich, the famous San Francisco trial attorney whose client list read like a Whose Who of Hollywood "Bad Boys" , and bad Women for that matter. Representing drummer Gene Krupa and jazz legend Billie Holiday for drug charges, Erlich was the inspiration for TV lawyer Sam Benedict, played by Edmond O'Brien and consulted on the production. He also coached Raymond Burr in his role as Perry Mason and many believe that Erlich was the model for the iconic television defense attorney. More to the point of this set, he famously represented Ferlinghetti, as owner of City Lights Bookstore, in the obscenity trial stemming from the sale of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl". (Wikipedia). Each volume has Erlich's signature on the top of the title page. A very handsome, collectable set and a terrific association. Seller Inventory # 015345
