About this Item
Thomas Chubb. A Collection of Tracts on Various Subjects. London: Printed for T. Cox…1730. First edition. Quarto, [14], 9-474 pages. Contemporary Cambridge-style calf, with hinges held on by cords. Gilt missing from spine label, wear at corners. Interior very good, paper clear and unmarked. Chubb was a prominent religious writer often characterized as a Deist. He certainly is a monotheist, but holds humans do not, in general, need salvation. Briefly, we are by and large OK. At least on the surface, Chubb allows that God intervenes in some cases, and that some people need divine grace. His general attitude is that reason comes first, and that any divine revelations would need confirmation that they are really divine. Things contrary to good sense are ipso facto not divine. He takes Abraham, for instance to have been deluded, though not blameworthy. Seller Inventory # ABE-1557694339593
