About this Item

There is a PON and a single "Withdrawn" stamp to free front endpaper, but no evidence of a lending library history -- no envelopes or card-holders nor evidence of any removal of same. Lacking the scarce dust jacket. Matching "1926" to title page and copyright page (where we also find the sailing-ship logo of the Knickerbocker Press), with no later dates or printings mentioned. Original hinges holding nicely. Gilt titles and "rooftop" device to front board strong with some scraping; gilt titles considerably faded but still legible to spine. Reddish-brown topstain; minor rub to board corners. Small indentation to top margins of pp. 222-223 where it appears a small metal object was once used as a bookmark, not impacting text and mentioned only for completeness. Only novel by the writer who became the New Yorker's correspondent in Paris, 1925-1975 -- writing as "Genet" -- where she became a familiar of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dos Passos, E.E. Cummings, Hart Crane, Ezra Pound, and Gertrude Stein, who on occasion she then reportedly introduced to Picasso, Braque, Matisse, André Gide, Jean Cocteau, etc. 426 pp. Reduced from $400.
