About this Item

Description:

First edition, 12mo, pp. [9], xiv-xci; roan-backed marbled boards; hinges cracked, spine chipped, boards rubbed. Inscribed "with respects of Author" on endpaper to a Muston(?). The translator Peabody declares this superior to all previous translations, but it was quickly exposed as a plagiarism of John Aitken Carlyle's 1894 translation, and Peabody's name does not appear on Wikipedia's list of Dante translators, nor does the promised second volume appear in any record.
